Using the Klang app for Mac
Dictate in any app and record meetings from your Mac.
With the Klang app for Mac, you can dictate text into any app and record meetings directly from your computer. Your recordings are saved to your Klang workspace, where they are transcribed and summarized. The app is in beta.
Before you start
- A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Macs with an Intel processor are not supported yet.
- macOS 13 Ventura or later
- A Klang account
Install Klang
- Download Klang for Mac
- Open the downloaded file and drag Klang to the Applications folder
- Open Klang from the Applications folder and follow the introduction
- Next to Microphone and Screen recording, click Allow. If macOS opens System Settings, turn on Klang there.
- Click Sign in and sign in through your browser
Klang connects automatically when you have signed in. When setup is done, you find Klang in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Permissions
Klang needs three macOS permissions:
- Microphone: records your voice in meetings and dictation
- Screen recording: captures the audio from other participants in Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. Klang records audio only, not your screen.
- Accessibility: inserts dictated text into other apps. Klang asks for this when you set up dictation.
Dictate in any app
- In the sidebar, click Dictation
- Click Get started
- Next to Accessibility, click Open settings and turn on Klang
- Choose the key you want to use. Fn is recommended, but you can also choose Right ⌥, ⌘⇧ Space, or your own combination.
- Try dictating, then click Continue and Get started
To dictate, place the cursor where you want the text. Hold the key, speak, and release the key. Klang inserts the text and removes filler words, fixes grammar, and adds punctuation.
With Smart mode turned on, you can also give instructions:
- Select text and say what to change, for example “make this more formal”
- Ask for new text, for example “write an email that says I will be late”
To change the key or turn off Smart mode, open Settings and select Dictation.
Record a meeting
When Klang detects a meeting in Google Meet, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams, a prompt appears. Click Record to record the meeting from your Mac.
If the meeting is in your connected calendar, the prompt can suggest Send the assistant instead. This sends the Klang bot to the meeting. To record from your Mac, click Record locally only.
To record an in-person meeting, click Record in Conversations. You can also click the Klang icon in the menu bar and select Record.
To stop, click the Klang icon in the menu bar and select Stop recording. Klang uploads the recording to your workspace. The transcript and summary appear in Conversations and in Klang on the web.
Updates
Klang checks for updates automatically. When a new version is available, click Download and install, then Restart. Some updates are required. Klang waits until your recordings and dictations are saved before it installs them.
To check for updates yourself, click the Klang icon in the menu bar and select Check for updates.
Troubleshooting
- Klang does not hear other participants, or dictated text does not appear: Open System Settings and select Privacy & Security. Turn on Klang under Microphone, Screen & System Audio Recording (Screen Recording in macOS 13 and 14), and Accessibility. Then click the Klang icon in the menu bar, select Quit Klang, and open Klang again. Closing the window is not enough.
- Your Mac cannot open Klang: Check that your Mac has Apple silicon and macOS 13 or later.
